The city's development was started with Petropavlovskaya Fortress and then extended to both riversides. The city used to be a capital for almost two hundred years, it was undoubtedly an era of prosperity for St. Petersburg.
Architecture of the city is typical European, because it was supposed to look like Amsterdam and Venice: wide avenues, thoroughfares, squares and numerous parks, buildings made of stone. The oldest buildings in center of the city are listed as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.
