Sergiev Posad was named after Reverend Sergii Radonejskiy, who founded the biggest abbey in Russia in 1337 - Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius.

The abbey owned a lot of lands around it, and it favoured the development of handicrafts and trade. It was famous for its toys which you can still buy in the abbey. The monastery was strongly connected with main historical events: Ivan the Terrible was christened in there, Peter the Great was hidden there during Streletskiy rebellion and much more.

The main temple of the Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius holds one of the most revered shrines of the Russian Orthodox world - the relics of Saint Sergei Radonezhsky. This is one of few cathedrals, where iconostasis painted by the greatest master painters - Andrei Rublev and Daniil Cherny is preserved.
