Peter And Paul Fortress Tour

Peter and Paul Fortress is the very first building in St. Petersburg, the building that started the city in the year 1703. It is still a historical center of the city.

Peter the First considered the city to be of a great importance as a part of the sea route from Western Europe to Russia, and the harbour next to Peter and Paul Fortress was the first one in Russia of the route. The fortress played important role in defending the city from sea attacks and was a military center of northern Russia, but in fact it has never participated in any battles.

Territory of the fortress includes Peter and Paul Cathedral, which is the center of this place. Around the Cathedral you will find bastions, curtains and quarters and a mint building which still functions. Since its foundation Peter and Paul Fortress was used as a prison for political prisoners, mostly Decemberists, and four of Great Dukes were shut inside its walls in 1919.

Every day since 1730 the cannon standing in Naryshkin Bastion marks noon with the shot and you also can see a flag on Flazhnaya Tower.
