Orthodox Moscow Tour

During this tour you will visit three of the most significant monasteries in Moscow: Danilov, Novospassky and Simonov. All of them are unique in their architecture and each is different from others, but together they make a monument to relationship between the State and Church in Russia. You will learn how this monasteries were based and what their purpose was.

Danilov monastery is considered to be the oldest friary in Moscow, it was founded by Duke Daniil of Moscow in the end of 13th century. This monastery saw all the history of our state, from Moscow principality to our days. Through the time this place was the center of spiritual life in Russia, and in 1930 monastery was even reorganized to become NKVD detention center for children of the repressed persons.

Novospassky monastery is famous for being a shrine of Romanovy boyars. After being closed in 1918 for almost 75 years and being a concentration camp, it was restored and returned to the Church and now it is a running friary.

Simonov monastery is strongly connected with key events in Russian history: it has always been a protective shield for the city, it commemorates the Battle of Kulikovo and also there was a biggest bell-tower in Russia, for some time it's been functioning as a plague carantin zone. The monastery was demolished by Bolsheviki in 1923 and the only one thing left was one of five churches.
