The Church Of The Savior On Spilled Blood Tour
The Church of the Savior on Spilled Blood was built at the place where Tsar Alexey II was assailed and killed, and what's why it is called "on Spilled Blood." The memorial church on Griboedov's channel was being built by his son Alexey III from 1883 to 1907 using the money gathered from all over Russia to commemorate Tsar's death.
The Cathedral differs from other buildings in St. Petersburg, which are mostly Baroque - it is a Russian traditional architecture. Being inspired by famous St. Basil's Cathedral, it has both fascinating exterior and remarkable interior: there are 7500 square metres of mosaic work made by 30 artists, and this is the biggest square of mosaic work in a church in the world.
After the Revolution the church was plundered and damaged and during the Second World War while the Siege of Leningrad took place it was used as a storage for corpses. After 27 years of being closed the Church was re-opened in 1997, though now it functions as a Museum of Mosaic.
